Dentures

Dentures, otherwise known as false teeth, come in two types – complete and partial. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

Complete dentures can be either ‘conventional’ or ‘immediate.’

Conventional dentures are made after the teeth have been removed and gone for some time.

Dentures

Immediate dentures are made in advance and can be inserted as soon as the teeth are removed. As a result, the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period.  During the healing period following tooth removal, the bone and gum supporting the denture(s) shrinks over time. This means that immediate dentures require regular adjustment and maintenance to ensure an adequate fit during this healing process. Consequently, immediate dentures will usually require a “reline” after a period of three to six months. This helps to improve the fit of the denture after the tissues have shrunk down.

A partial denture consists of replacement teeth attached to a natural gum-coloured plastic base. This can be connected by metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth. Partial dentures are used when a number of natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw.   At Murray Dental we use a Master Dental Technician who we work closely with to make quality dentures in ways to hide any wires without using inferior quality materials that cause gum issues.
