Dental Implants

A dental implant is a titanium screw that is inserted into the jaw bone. This then goes on to having a dental crown is attached to it.  The bone attaches to the surface of the implant via ‘bone building cells’ so that the implant is ‘fused’ to the bone and as such is permanent.

A natural tooth consists of a visible crown that is covered with white enamel and supported by a root that extends into the jawbone. In a dental implant procedure, the root of the tooth is replaced with a titanium screw/implant.

Dental implants are a great alternative to dentures or more conventional fixed bridges as the adjacent teeth are untouched as long as your dentist establishes that you are a good candidate for them. Not only is a dental implant a long-lasting solution for missing teeth, but they also look and feel like natural teeth.

A dental implant can be used to keep dentures or dental bridges in place.

Dental Implant

There are three basic types of dental implants:

  • Single Tooth Dental Implant: This is a permanent dental solution designed to replace a single missing tooth.
  • Multiple Teeth Dental Implant Bridge: For two or more missing teeth, a multiple teeth dental implant bridge or prosthesis is a fixed dental solution so you don’t need to take your plate out.

  • Full Arch Fixed Dental Implant Bridge: If you have either or both the upper or/and lower row of teeth missing, a full arch fixed dental implant bridge is a permanent solution to avoid removable appliances.

Any surgical or invasive procedure such as implant placement carries risks. You should seek an opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner when considering this course of treatment.
